Candle Care FAQ
A little care helps you enjoy your candle. Always follow the instructions and warnings on your candle's label; they take priority over this general guide.
How do I trim the wick?
Before lighting, let the candle cool completely and trim the wick according to the label. For many cotton wicks, about ¼ inch is a common starting point; wooden or specialty wicks may need different care. Remove wick trimmings and other debris before lighting.
What should I do on the first burn?
Place your candle on a level, heat-resistant surface and follow its recommended burn session. An even melt pool can help reduce tunneling, but never exceed the label's burn-time limit just to melt wax to the edges.
How long should each burn last?
Follow the maximum session length on the label. As a general precaution, do not burn longer than four hours at a time, or the shorter limit specified for your candle. Let the wax and container cool completely before relighting. Total candle life varies with size, wick, formulation, and use; ask us about the specific candle if you need an estimate.
Where can I safely burn a candle?
Use a stable, heat-resistant surface, well away from curtains, paper, bedding, and anything that could catch fire. Keep candles away from drafts, vents, and fans, with plenty of clear space above and around them. Keep them out of reach of children and pets. Never leave a burning candle unattended, and extinguish it before leaving the room or going to sleep. Do not touch or move a lit candle or a container holding hot wax.
What if the flame is too high or the candle is smoking?
Extinguish the candle and let it cool completely. Check for drafts, debris, and an overlong wick before relighting according to the label. Stop using a candle if smoking or an unstable flame persists, or if the container is cracked or damaged.
How do I extinguish my candle?
Use a candle snuffer, keeping your hands away from the flame and hot wax. Never use water or replace the lid to extinguish the flame unless the manufacturer specifically instructs you to. Check that the flame and any glowing wick are fully out, then allow the candle to cool before handling.
When should I stop burning it?
Follow the stopping point on the label. For many container candles, stop with at least ½ inch of wax remaining, or more if the label requires it. Never burn a container candle completely dry.
Can I reuse the container?
Only reuse an intact container after it has fully cooled and been cleaned using a method appropriate for its material. Avoid sharp tools, direct heat, and sudden temperature changes. Never pour wax down a drain. Consider non-food uses such as holding small household items. Do not use the container for food, drinks, or a new candle unless its manufacturer confirms it is suitable for that purpose.
How should I store my candle?
Store upright in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Once the candle is fully cool, replace its lid if supplied to keep dust and debris out. Fragrance and appearance can change over time; contact us if you notice damage or are unsure about using an older candle.
What wax and fragrance ingredients are used?
Materials and fragrance details vary by candle. Review the information provided for your chosen product, and contact us for any ingredient details you cannot find. Scent notes describe the fragrance experience, not necessarily a full ingredient list. We do not make blanket claims that fragrances are non-toxic, allergen-free, or safe for every person or animal.
What if I am sensitive to fragrance?
If you have a known sensitivity or need to avoid a specific ingredient, ask about that candle before purchasing or burning it. Use ventilation and stop use if the scent or smoke causes discomfort. Consult a healthcare professional for individual health guidance.
Can I use candles around pets?
No fragrance should be assumed pet-safe. Risk depends on the specific ingredients, the animal's species and health, and the exposure. Ask your veterinarian for ingredient-specific guidance before using scented products around your pet, especially birds or animals with respiratory conditions.
Keep candles and wax out of reach of paws, tails, and curious mouths. Supervise pets, never leave a flame unattended, ventilate the space, and let animals leave the room. Supervision and ventilation do not make an unsuitable ingredient safe. Avoid burning candles in rooms housing birds. If a pet shows distress or ingests wax or fragrance, stop use and contact a veterinarian promptly.
